Orthodontics deals specifically with the correction of dental irregularities, but the term does not adequately describe orthodontic treatment of skeletal discrepancies and ambitious aesthetic goals of this specialty in relation to facial balance and harmony and balanced functional occlusion. Dental malocclusion is often secondary to abnormal skeletal development.

The way to treat this type of malocclusion can be either orthodontic, with special attention to correcting dental (teeth), or orthopedic aimed at correcting the underlying skeletal abnormality. This difference is recognized that there are two schools of thought regarding the objectives of orthodontic treatment.
